A little too deep
After last week’s seminar I had to do some deep soul searching. I did a renewal self evaluation. Looking at the history of this country; America, the “Land of the Free” and its history in engrained in slavery and barbarism, murder, and rape. What an embarrassment. I used to look down on Germany for their actions in the Holocaust, but America is no better. Looking at this topic I had to decipher everything about myself. Am I living a lie? My language, my heritage, even my religion. I had to question whether being a Christian was right. How could people enslave others, change their names, identity; break up families in the name of God? I had to question whether I wanted to believe in that same God. The white man’s God who they stood steadfast on His words. The more I learn the more confused I become. I have mixed feelings about a lot of this. Many people have told me that slavery happened so long ago and that it should be left as a part of history, but when I see the effects that it has on people today I cannot leave it in the past. I am always telling my kids to be mindful when they are in stores. Don’t touch anything and keep your hands out of your pockets! I say. I cannot get help in certain stores but I can sure be followed. Just on Thursday I was followed in Sears of all stores the sales lady never once asked if I needed any help but she followed me all the way to the door. I thought she was coming home with me but I guess not. All I could think about is what the hell I am going to steal from Sears. Damn, I tried to steal the lawnmower but it wouldn’t fit in my pocket. Subtle racism is the worst because you know it is there but the other person is doing a terrible job of covering it up. I do not want to live in a peaceful world where everything is rosy. I want people to be real and genuine. If you are scared to touch me because my blackness may rub off on you let me know. I like to know how people feel up front; it eliminates all the guess work.

I was very moved by your post so I decided to reflect a little on my own blog. http://csumbfreespeech.blogspot.com/2008/02/sundance-meet-filmmaker-katrina-browne.html
slavery is not dead, the chains are just not so tangilbe anymore. racism is far from dead, instead of being an outward force it is like the internet; in the air unseen, untangible but real and still divesting the humanity of those whom it feeds off of. the bourgeois power in this country has commited much to harm done things beyond moral comprehension to be left unchecked anymore. I hope more people have similar moments of clarity and wake up to the situation here in this capitalist system. Respect & Revolution
Our world is messed up. People are assholes. I am really sorry to hear about this. I know what you mean about Christianity too. Most wars and horrible acts were done "in the name of god" of almost any religion.(except buddhism, they are cool.)
i mean.. buddhism is cool.
Yeah..I think racism is now institutionalized--the justice system especially. Maybe we don't call is slavery--but why else is there an overwhelming number of african-americans in the prison system?? Look at health care, the projects...any social indicator points to the fact that African-Americans are still enduring the effects...
You can sit next to me anytime, I am not afraid! I think that we all have to search our souls when we are adults - especially with kids because we look around and think "what did I bring them into this mess for!" They bring us so much joy and happiness, yet we have no idea how the world is going to be when we are not here to protect them anymore. I am sorry to hear that you had that experience at Sears - but glad that you could joke about it. Humor is so great for dealing with situations like that. When I went to London a few years ago, every gift shop I went into (mostly owned by Middle Easterners) someone in the store would follow me around RIGHT behind me. It took me a while to figure out that they thought I was going to steal something. Not a pleasant feeling but you have to also consider that if the employee at Sears is "suspicious" of a customer for whatever her reason is, that's on her and you should try not to let it get to you.
